Now SRK flies to Chennai to meet Rajini

Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan is ecstatic at the moment and can’t do much but go ga-ga over Tamil superstar Rajinikanth.
The veteran actor had flown to Mumbai to shoot for SRK’s `RA.One` despite doctor’s advice to take complete rest until November. And now the Baadshah of Bollywood is doing his bit to thank Rajini for making his upcoming film possible.

SRK will be in Chennai today but his meeting with the legendary actor has been kept hush-hush.

Talking to a daily, a source said, “He will be there because his IPL team will be in the city and he will also use this opportunity to pay Rajini a visit."

Even SRK had admitted that he is a big fan and admirer of the Tamil actor. He had said, "I`m a Rajini fanatic. I will definitely pay him a visit at home on my next trip to Chennai.”

“I get goose bumps even as I talk about it," the king of romance added.

Shah Rukh is grateful to Rajini and his family for helping him realize his dream of having the superstar in `RA.One`.

"I just wish I can be as humble as Rajini sir some day. He`s a fantastic human being. He has touched my life in more ways than one," SRK said.

'Who is Shah Rukh Khan?'

Though Shera addresses Salman Khan as 'Maalik', but their equation is completely in contrast with what others perceive.

And If "Bodyguard" was an archetypal Sallu's attempt to express his love for Shera, younger bro Azbaaz too is doing his bit to bring him to the filmy fold. "Yes I will be doing a role in "Dabangg 2"," said Shera. We caught up with him where revealed many things, including his plans when Sallu gets married

People who know you well never call you Salman's bodyguard
That's so kind of them. Whatever they feel, but my prime motive is to take all his problems. I have been with him since long and would want to till I die. I owe everything to him.

You sacrificed your turban (Shera was turbaned Sikh) for him
He's done so much for me and this is nothing. Bhai has showed me the real world. I mean anything for him. Voh bolega nadi me kood mai koodunga.

"Bodyguard" was dedicated to you. Now what's with "Dabangg 2"?
The shooting for "D-2" will begin in 2012. I am not sure what sequence I will get, but yes I have a role in that. Arbaaz bhai told me that he has something for me. It's the biggest honour and I think no one has done so much. What was I? Practically his bodyguard, but the respect he gave to me, it's out of the world.

It means will you be a prominent face in movies as well?
No no. I am not a movie material. I am doing because bhai has said. Otherwise I am not an actor. I am happy guarding him and would like to continue it as well.

What if you get a movie offer from other Khan?
What Khan? I don't know who are these Khans. My Maalik is the only Khan I know. Mujhe kuch nahi pata kaun Khan kya kar raha hai. I am only concerned about Bhai, whom I venerate.

Post treatment how's Salman feeling now?
He's fit and fine and is shooting for "Ek Tha Tiger". He has suffered a lot because of this problem. And it's not that after operation he's completely fit. We need to wait for six months for results and then get the MRI done. It's a long procedure and he has to be very particular about medicines and routine.

SRK recently said to Kareena that she works with chotey chotey Khan
Yeh insaan kaun hai. I think Shah Rukh has lost it. This is not him but a complex that's speaking aloud. SRK ko dunia jaanti hogi, but main usey nahi jaanta. He should be ashamed of himself. Person's stature can't be assessed from his success level and what's equally important is how humble you are. I always felt once the trappings of stardom has started to give you kick, you are on verge of going down.

Salman's marriage is an evergreen topic. Have you ever thought what will you do if he decides to enter wedlock?
That's his personal choice and I will not say anything about it. But one this is for sure I will rock the world. Arey poori dunia me jashn hoga us din and you will see Shera celebrating like crazy. But if you ask me when's he getting married, sorry I have no answer.
Fifteen years. Have you ever had any difference of opinion with bhai over some thing?
Never. His wish is my command and I strictly follow the dictum. He understands me and has never ever said anything to me because he trusts me.

Yes he trusts you. That's why he said if Shera writes my biography, Salman would be dead
(For a change he laughs) I am not going to write any kitaab.

How difficult it gets for you to take Salman to public places and events?
With his fans and paparazzi chasing, it gets complicated at times, but then what I am paid for?

You have a son, Tiger. Will he be joining you?
No, he's too young for that. He's studying and has his own aims and dreams. I am not the one who would impose things.

Will he be King again?

Shah Rukh Khan desperately needs Ra.One to do well to reaffirm his hold on Bollywood
Surajeet Das Gupta, Varada Bhat, Priyanka Joshi / New Delhi/ Mumbai October 8, 2011, 0:48 IST

A dedicated team of eight to ten works tirelessly to get Shah Rukh Khan or SRK through the myriad promotional events, endorsements, press briefings, gaming events, TV show appearances and interviews with the electronic media. The public relations agent ensures that the actor is kept supplied with pots of hot coffee and journalists stick to their allotted time slots. His make-up man fusses over him for a fresh round of paint and a change of shirts.

Another attendant ensures that SRK eats his roasted lean cuts regularly. With work stretching to 18 hours every day, SRK says that he needs the pampering to keep him going until October 26 when Ra.One releases in theatres. “Distinction between night & day waning… Having dinner at 6 am but energy levels still high,” he tweeted on October 3.

The night before, SRK had appeared on three reality shows to promote his film. Sitting in a five-star hotel in suburban Mumbai he looks confident, in fact cocky. SRK sticks to his promise of one cigarette during the half-hour interview — there are no signs of nervousness and pre-release jitters.

Hasn’t he been left behind in the sweepstakes? “Whatever the naysayers may write, I am still King Khan, and you may call me any name. Even my bad films draw collections that some of the so-called good films don’t,” SRK puts up a brave front. “If the film does not pull through, then the wedding season is round the corner and I can go and dance in a few weddings to earn back the remainder. A couple of films and endorsements and I will be good.”

That’s exactly the reason why Ra.One needs to do well. Endorsements and invitations to perform at functions come only so long as your films do well. In the world of celebrity endorsements, word is out that SRK can be signed for Rs 4 crore, down from his peak of Rs 7 crore. With almost 20 brand endorsements, there is no way SRK can let his star (read Box Office) charisma fade. “SRK as a brand has not grown the way others have grown,” says Kwan Entertainment & Marketing Solutions Managing Director Anirban Das Blah. “You see SRK less as an actor and more as a businessman, while others like Aamir, Salman and Hrithik (Roshan) have maintained that actor status.” His last reality show, Zor ka Jhatka on NDTV Imagine, sank without a trace.

Actually, a lot rides on Ra.One: Big money (Rs 200 crore) and SRK’s reputation as the King of Bollywood. He hasn’t had a single release in the last year and a half. During this period, Salman Khan has given three films that have done domestic collections in excess of Rs 100 crore: Bodyguard (Rs 147 crore), Dabangg (Rs 140 crore) and Ready (Rs 120 crore).

In contrast, none of SRK’s films has touched the magic figure of Rs 100 crore in domestic ticket sales. While Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) did Rs 87 crore, Om Shanti Om (2007) sold Rs 79 crore and My Name is Khan (2010) did Rs 72 crore. Aamir Khan’s last two films, 3 Idiots (2009) and Ghajini (2008) too did over Rs 100 crore — Rs 204 crore and Rs 114 crore, respectively.

                                                                               * * *

Ra.One is being produced by Eros International. On top of the Rs 150 crore spent on production, it has spent another Rs 50 crore on marketing. That brings the total investment to Rs 200 crore. The satellite rights were sold to Star TV for Rs 35 crore almost a year back. T Series has bought the music rights for another Rs 15 crore. More could come from sale to the digital media and pay-per-view television. “Almost 70 to 80 per cent of the cost will be recovered from pre-licensed content before the film hits the theatres,” says Eros CFO Kamal Jain. The rest of the money needs to come through ticket sales.

SRK expects Ra.One to do 25 to 30 per cent better in collections than his last release, My Name is Khan, which had collected Rs 72 crore in India and Rs 86 crore abroad. While cinema tickets are moderately taxed overseas, in India the incidence is as high as 60 per cent.

SRK’s calculations may help Eros break even, though trade analysts say the film needs to collect around Rs 250 crore in India and abroad. “For SRK, a lot is at stake both personally and professionally,” says film distributor Suniel Wadhwa. SRK acknowledges that his personal fortune is at stake. “When I started out, I told my family that the movie would cost me much more than a Bollywood film and I may even lose money on it. They backed me,” says he.

“While we have gone over-budget, in fact nearly five times over the original amount, I know it’s not an unrecoverable amount.”

Eros does not want to take any chances. It has finalised plans to release the movie in 3,000 screens across India in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, and this includes the 3D version in 300 screens. In addition, Ra.One will release in 400 screens globally, and will have simultaneous releases in the Far East as well as several European and Latin American countries. It will also be dubbed in German and subtitled in several languages. SRK’s magic really works abroad.

Even SRK’s fiercest critics admit that he has an amazing fan base outside India and there is a pent-up demand to see him after a long gap. For instance, My Name is Khan was a huge hit in South Korea. This time round, Eros wants to release Ra.One in 30 screens in Taiwan and more than 100 screens in Korea — unheard of markets for Indian films till recently.

In overseas collections, in fact, SRK is miles ahead of both Aamir and Salman — none of their films has done even half of My Name is Khan. In 2007, SRK was awarded the Order of the Arts and Literature by the French government for his “exceptional career”. He was conferred the honorific “Datuk” by the Malaysian government in 2008 for “promoting tourism in Malacca”. The next year, the University of Bedfordshire in Britain gave him an honorary degree in arts and culture. His statue can be found at Madame Tussauds (in wax) in London, the Musee Gravin in Paris as well as in Hong Kong and New York.

                                                                               * * *

The problem is domestic collections. Producers say SRK is an urban multiplex phenomenon, while almost 70 per cent of collections come from single-screen theatres in smaller towns and cities. This is important for another reason: Multiplexes get a higher share of collections from the producer than single-screens. While multiplexes take 50 per cent of the collections in the first week, single-screens are happy with 40 per cent. If it runs more than one week, the terms become more favourable for the producer in single-screens than multiplexes.

SRK’s producers are not making any compromises on Ra.One. The movie is a technological marvel and has raised the bar on VFX technique in Indian cinema. The film has over 3,500 shots, which is even higher than Avatar (2,700 shots) and Rajnikanth’s Robot (2,100 shots). It has used a crew of over 5,000 from India, Italy and the US for this. “Money is important, and let’s not try to lose money. But you should not sacrifice quality for profit. Ra.One is a calling card for technology,” says SRK.

He has also launched a digital marketing blitzkrieg with Ra.One — from YouTube channels to social games. Do you see shades of Aamir here? “I have been asked if I am trying to compare marketing gimmicks with Aamir. Why should I? I have a film that hasn’t ever been attempted in India; it has the best talent working on it and is as good as Hollywood films. I don’t need gimmicks,” he says. “Marketing the film online was always the plan but if it is going to be compared with what my peers have done, then I think I am doing things differently.”

SRK says some of the digital initiatives he really believed in go with the film’s DNA. “I knew I wanted a digital presence through games because I know how kids today, including my son, love to game on mobile devices. But the association with Google to have a dedicated video channel, social games where players can buy goods and play, promoting music and content on Nokia devices happened because my team agreed with me that it was the best way to go for Ra.One to connect with the youth who are the target audience,” says he.

A little over six months ago, Shailja Gupta, the head of digital and merchandising at Red Chillies, SRK’s production house, came up with a blueprint of what can be done with Ra.One. From games to online advertising, she had it all covered. The Red Chillies team then approached UTV Indiagames to design a social game based on the film. The logic was that social networks are big among the adult youth, and this would serve the dual purpose of marketing the film as well as entertaining users in the digital space. “The best part is that the game is independent of the film and will have a life of its own even after the film. UTV Indiagames is promoting it across platforms and even Facebook, which is simply fantastic as I don’t think I could have tapped them through traditional means. When I got my son to play the game on mobile, he was hooked to it; if the game could get him interested, I know it will interest youngsters on social networks. Also, the film is based on the classic good versus evil plot, making it an ideal premise for games, I believe,” says SRK.

But the bottom-line is, will the film make money? “Every film has its own space. With so many movies crossing Rs 100 crore (in collections) within the first few days, I understand that the business has grown and such returns do exist,” says SRK. Around Christmas will release his next film, Don 2, which has also been made on a budget of Rs 150 crore. The two films account for one-fifth of Bollywood’s annual production cost. For Bollywood’s sake, SRK just can’t afford a flop.

Kareena to miss the Toronto premiere of 'RA.One'

Kareena Kapoor, better known of late as the 'Khan Queen', finds herself in an awkward situation thanks to that very celebrated title. The dates of the Toronto premiere of her 'RA.One' with Shah Rukh Khan and the shooting schedule of Reema Katgi's 'Dhuaan' with Aamir Khan are apparently clashing.

Not surprisingly Bebo has chosen Mr Perfectionist, the Khan she has been raving about ever since their blockbuster film '3 Idiots', over 'RA.One'. A source, however, defends her decision of choosing Aamir over Shah Rukh Khan.

"Kareena has to take some special training for an underwater sequence in the film and she needs time for that too. So going for the premiere is out of the question." The shoot sequence in question was supposed to be shot in the outskirts of Mumbai. It was cancelled last minute due to certain technical issues.

Now, apparently, the location for the shoot has been finally finalised. Since it's one of the last few scenes to be shot, it cannot be delayed again. Adds the source, "Kareena is the female lead and SRK obviously wants her around as much as possible. She is trying her best to attend the Dubai and London premieres because she does not want to miss the international premieres of her film."

However, she has not been able to work around her dates for the third global premiere. "This film is obviously her biggest this year, and she definitely wants to be a part of all promotional events. It's just unfortunate that the premiere is now clashing with the shoot dates of Dhuaan." The actress will be shooting for Dhuaan on October 26, and hence will not be part of the premiere in Toronto or any other promotional activity on that day for the ShahRukh-starrer.

Shahrukh Khan bows down to Rajinikanth's demands

Looks like Shah Rukh can do anything for Rajinikanth, even if it means increasing his film's cost. According to sources, Rajinikanth suggested some changes in RA.One's action scenes and King Khan agreed to him instantly.

“During the filming at Whistling Woods, Goregaon West, RajniKant wanted changes in the action and visuals. These changes will be implemented, but it will take some additional VFX, which in turn will add to Shah Rukh’s costs,” a source informed Mumbai Mirror.

SRK not only agreed to the changes, but he would also implement them exactly the way Rajini wants.

“SRK and Sinha (Anubhav) deliberated on Rajini’s changes for a few minutes. The cost to Shah Rukh and the co-producers Eros International will also increase. But Rajini is a master in special effects, his last film involving special effects Robot was a treat. And so, SRK agreed readily to Rajinikanth’s changes. He told Rajini ‘Sir, it will be done exactly as you say’," added the source.

Hope Rajinikanth's suggestions prove fruitful for RA.One.

Rajinikanth And Shah Rukh Khan finally shoot for Ra.One

The long-delayed moment in cinematic history finally happened when two superstars - Rajinikanth and Shah Rukh Khan - shot together for " Ra.One" at Subhash Ghai's Whistling Woods studio.

The mighty Tamil icon arrived with his younger daughter Soundarya who single-handedly made the historic scene possible. The rest of Rajinikanth's family was apparently totally against his one-day break from his sabbatical and the process of recuperation.

In fact, Rajinikanth's elder daughter Aishwarya categorically told this writer a few days ago that the super icon was not shooting for "Ra.One"!

But Rajini did arrive here Sunday with Soundarya and her team of technicians.

In the afternoon, the megastar and his team headed for Ghai's studio and shot the scene amidst an environment of incredible bonhomie.

Shah Rukh then bid goodbye to the semi-ailing Chennai God.

King Khan and his "Ra.One" team later headed straight for the studios to put the scene in place.

"Ra.One" now stands officially complete.

Sound designer Resul Pookutty took time off from post-production of "Ra.One" to describe the "humbling, inspiring, overwhelming experience" of watching the two superstars shoot together.

"The shooting went off like a dream. Watching Rajini Sir and SRK together was indeed a dream come true. The shooting went off so gracefully and with so much finesse. This is truly a great tribute from one superstar to an icon," said Resul.

"The 'Ra.One' team feels the film is complete now after Rajini Sir's shooting. Both Rajini Sir and Shah Rukh in one frame together are like wildfire! They were so comfortable together. It was hard to imagine they had never shot together before," Resul added.

Resul felt the shooting couldn't have happened without Soundrya's support.

"She came to Mumbai with her team to oversee every detail of the shooting. There is no one like Rajinikanth. He proved it when he set aside his health concerns and came to Mumbai on Sunday," Resul noted.

"The 'Ra.One' team can't thank him enough," said Resul adding: "If he had not shot for us, 'Ra.One' would've remained incomplete."

A witness said, "Shah Rukh and Rajini Sir hit it off instantaneously. It was almost like their sequence together was meant to happen."

"Shah Rukh and Rajni Sir were so comfortable with one another. Shah Rukh made the senior superstar so comfortable. There was no doubt that Shah Rukh is Rajinikanth's fan and he didn't hide it on Sunday afternoon as he faced the icon for the camera," the witness said.

Apparently the only other time when King Khan felt so humbled while shooting with a co-star was when he shot with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time, and with that other doyen of Tamil cinema - Kamal Haasan - in "Hey Ram".

SRK's promotional drive for 'RA.One' on small screen

Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan returned to his roots - the small screen, to promote his most ambitious film project 'RA.One'. The Bollywood superstar took to the finale episodes of three reality shows Saturday night, and added glitz and glamour to them with his inimitable style, wit and dance.

The 45-year-old, who started his acting career with TV shows like 'Fauji' and 'Circus' in the late 1980s, appeared on the finales of Star Plus' 'Just Dance', Colors' 'India's Got Talent 3' and Zee TV's 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs'.

While Shah Rukh's presence on dance reality show 'Just Dance' and talent contest 'India's Got Talent 3' was pre-recorded, kids' singing reality show 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li'l Champs' was aired deferred live from Surat.

Shah Rukh was at his jovial best on all the shows as he danced, sang, cracked jokes as well as interacted with the audience to promote his mega-budget film 'RA.One', releasing this Diwali Oct 26.

The actor, who plays a superhero in the film, grooved to his film's most popular number 'Chhammak chhallo' and made the shows' participants dance as well. Apart from presenting the winners' trophy on the shows, he also distributed his film's merchandise, especially a G.One doll based on the movie's villain, essayed on screen by actor Arjun Rampal.

A true entertainer, Shah Rukh was in full form as he performed vigorous dance steps, much to the delight of the viewers.

'RA.One' also features Kareena Kapoor, and Shah Rukh is leaving no stone unturned to market it well across all possible platforms.

I genuinely believe that the mentors as well as each of our Li’l Champ have done a marvelous job in bringing alive the euphoria associated with Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champ as a brand. SRK launches custom-built movie channel for RA.One

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who is leaving no stone unturned in marketing RA.One, today launched a custom built movie channel on leading online video platform YouTube for his upcoming film.

The movie channel on YouTube will offer users all videos of the RA.One premiere, red carpet events planned in London, behind the scene shots, uncut footage of the star cast and Shah Rukh's thoughts.

It will also host games and give chance to users to create promos from clips, music and dialogues of the film.

"This concept goes well with my Ra.One as the film is about digital world...computer and all. So (I) launched it on a digital platform like YouTube. Besides, it will help me take the film to more people. I am thrilled and excited about it," the actor told reporters here.

The initiative will make Shah Rukh one of the first Indian celebrities to be on the Google plus platform and engage with fans.

Internationally, YouTube has worked with several Hollywood productions, the most recent being Skadoosh Kung Fu Panda 2 with Hollywood actor Jack Black, which became a hit worldwide.

"This initiative will launch a new platform in digital marketing for Bollywood films," Red Chillies Entertainment, Digital and Merchandising Shailja Gupta said.

Ra.One challenges Shah Rukh Khan, the star

On a summer day in 2006, Shah Rukh Khan and director Anubhav Sinha are driving around Los Angeles.

Among other things, they are discussing a sweet and simple father-son story, but with a twist. Suddenly, SRK breaks into a smile. "That's it! I can see it! The film is done, ready for release!" Sinha looks at him incredulously. SRK continues, a mad glint in his eyes, "Not only has it been released, picture superhit hai!"

Five years on, that story is one of the most ambitious, expensive and perhaps technologically complex Hindi films ever. And the success of producer-actor SRK's Ra.One is a national debate.

"It is an enormous challenge for Shah Rukh." says Karan Johar, perhaps SRK's closest friend. "Not as an actor - because he has always pushed that envelope - but as a producer. Most importantly, it challenges Shah Rukh Khan, the star."

How big is the film, really?
Ra.One has taken in at least Rs 150 crore in making (excluding promotions), though no one - neither SRK's Red Chillies nor Eros - are willing to validate the numbers. Its nearest contender is Rajinikant's Robot, which was made on a similar budget.

Ra.One's crew has some 5,000 members, says director Sinha; from India, Italy and the US. The Director of Photography is Nicola Pecorini of Loathing in Las Vegas fame. The film is edited by Academy-award winner Martin Walsh ( Chicago).

The film was shot in Goa, London and Mumbai in three phases. Early this year, SRK decided to convert the film into 3D, pushing up the budget.

Resul Pookutty was roped in to enhance the sound effects, and SRK took it upon himself to upgrade the sound system in select multiplexes across India. In an earlier interview to Mirror, Pookutty explained, "You see, RA.One is not just a movie experience... It requires a very unconventional sound and visual quality for which we're installing the required equipment."

The marketing budget for the film is said to be Rs 40 crore, which includes Rs 15 crore for online promotions - both said to be firsts for Indian cinema. Rs 14 crore has reportedly been earmarked for promotion on news channels a fortnight before release.

African-American R&B star Akon's Chammak Challo in its six variations has been sitting pretty on the charts. In Delhi, Formula One icon Michael Schumacher will drive, a car bearing the film's logo. Global pop phenomenon Lady Gaga may endorse the film at an after party hosted by SRK's co-star Arjun Rampal.

And, there is also Rajinikant playing Rajnikant in a cameo. Mind it.

It's my film, make it large
So how did the father-son story turn into what Johar says can "rewrite the textbook of computer graphics in Indian cinema"? At what point did the film start to challenge Shah Rukh Khan, the star?

Director Sinha says the biggest challenge was that he had no readymade comic-book superhero in G.One, SRK's character. So, says Sinha, he and SRK spent months going through video clips, digital art portals and comic books. "SRK was very clued into this world," says Sinha. "I picked up a lot of things in the process."

It soon became apparent, says the director, that the battle between G.One and superbaddie Ra.One deserved epic treatment. The budget was revised; post-production became the focus. In the ensuing months, Sinha says he "remained underground", immersed in the VFX studio "only to emerge occasionally and panic".

SRK, meanwhile, was managing Kolkata Knight Riders, getting booed at D Y Patil, battling a bad knee problem, getting less than glowing certificates from old friends, and embroiled in a stand-off with a political party over his Twitter remarks.

In between trickled reports of Ra.One's 'borrowed' ideas, 'runaway' budget, post-production 'niggles' and box-office crystal-gazing.

There was something else too. Dabanng, Ready and Bodyguard, made on fractions of Ra.One's budget, had smashed box-office records. The Badshah was no longer up against himself, he was also up against his fiercest rival.

"Post Dabanng, Singham, Bodyguard, that have marked a return of the action hero, there is a lot of pressure on SRK to deliver," says trade expert Amod Mehra. "While Ra.One's music is doing great, and the promos look very promising, there could be an issue with the young audience responding to a 40-plus actor as a superhero."

Mehra is quick to add that Ra.One will comfortably recover its costs in the opening weekend. But that doesn't matter in no-losses-anymore Bollywood. Ra.One is more about brand Shah Rukh Khan.

Riding on brand SRK
Sinha, the Dhoom man who faces his biggest test as director with Ra.One, is worried. "There have been some serious investments in the film," he says. "I want all the investors to make good on what they have put in."

Three days before the film's music launch, he nervously asked T Series's Bhushan Kumar, "Music chalegi na?" There was a pause on the other end of the line, before Kumar, who has bought the music rights for a reported Rs 15 crore, replied: "Are you crazy? This is a Shah Rukh Khan film, it is bound to work!"

Kumar admits that he is banking on brand SRK. "While Akon is a huge international star, for our market, he is just a value add," says the music moghul.

Celeb management company Madison Mates's CEO Darshana Bhalla is busy stitching up endorsement and marketing deals. "You cannot spend Rs 150 crore if you are not sure of your product," Bhalla says. "This man understands his market. He knows women love it when he opens his arms, and if he is trying out a different genre, he knows what he is doing. We are banking on SRK."

For Eros International, the film's distributors, math is simple. "Contrary to market buzz, the film is reasonably budgeted and it has immense monetisation potential," says CFO Kamal Jain. "Some 40 to 80 per cent of the cost will be recovered from the pre-licensed content - distributed across platforms such as cable, digital, home theatre, etc - before the film hits the theatre."

But the box office matters, he admits: "It is important for Ra.One to do well for us to pull up the top line margins. After all, it is one of the most prestigious films in our stable. This is the first true superhero film; it stands on an Indian core - good songs, humour, family drama. It is an out and out commercial product. No one other than SRK can carry this off."

SRK to the challenge
The man at the epicentre of expectation is pulling out all the stops. SRK's calendar is choc-a-bloc with appearances, launches, events. "There are FMCG brands, consumer electronics, media, all keen to be a part of the film," says Bhalla. It helps, of course, that SRK is the face of several such products already.

Ra.One's music launch was streamed live on a video-sharing site for an undisclosed amount. The star-studded music launch's telecast rights were sold to a TV channel for a reported Rs 10 crore. Satellite rights have reportedly been sold for Rs 35 crore. Distribution rights are said to have been sold for Rs 77 crore. An electronics giant has bought a Ra.One game for Rs 5 crore.

Cast away doubts about youngsters and a 40-plus superhero. The film will be an SRK affair.

"Without giving away too much of the film, I can tell you that it has everything - song, dance, romance and love well integrated with the technology," says Johar, who once quipped on TV that he knew if he could show SRK crying he had a superhit film.

Bhalla echoes Johar: "It is a commercial film, with a very strong emotional quotient. He is still the saviour, the protector women fall in love with."

That could also be a good thing for the NRI market, where SRK stands taller than his films. Even then, industry voices say brand SRK may not have the same negotiating power for Ra.One as compared to his other release, Don2.

"Don2 is a proven franchise," says a marketing veteran who was involved with two high-end brand tie-ins for both the SRK films. "One is willing to pay three times more for an in-film placement on Don2 than Ra.One, because there is a certain kind of scepticism around the [desi sci-fi] genre. Ra.One's destiny will be decided in exactly two days. The idea is to encash the pre-release buzz, get your money's worth as an investor before the audience gets to the theatre."

Pressure on SRK?
Sinha maintains his producer-actor has rarely showed the pressure on the sets. "He was always smiling, full of energy and extremely patient," he says, adding, "The only time one saw him crumble was when his close friend Bobby Chawla slipped into coma."

SRK's tweets, however, imply a mind possessed by an idea - "music sitting...sound sitting & baby sitting. so much sitting & my feet r killing me. been woken up by kids before i could sleep."

"@nittmish its a big responsibility... to bring new technology and new genre in bollywood. kuch naya nahi kiya ton kya kiya?kya jiya"

"so tired can't even hit the bed...cant hit anything. i feel a farishta (angel) watches over my source of energy & resilience. Thanx Allah."

"overworked. overeaten.overunderslept.overquestioned. over & out time. will try & sleep. hope it rains tomorrow to wash away remains of today."

SRK's friends say he thrives in chaos. "It has been his dream to make this kind of a film," says Johar. "And he loves this frenetic pace, he thrives in this kind of pressure. If everything was organised and peaceful, he would not be able to function."

Besides the desire to make money - perhaps the only star honest enough to admit to dancing at weddings to make moolah - SRK is driven by an intense desire to be liked, observes a senior film writer close to the star: "With Ra.One, he has set himself up for a different test - make a film that will appeal to your inner child. It is a tough thing to do. And no one quite knows what is going on inside his head at the moment."

Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Shahrukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan to travel together

It's a known fact that Bollywood stars are famous across the globe. But who would've thought that their wax figures would get as big a response as the stars themselves? That's exactly what's going to happen on foreign shores next month. Madame Tussauds in Blackpool, United Kingdom, is to launch a Global Touring Bollywood Exhibition, which will showcase the Indian superstars at Madame Tussauds in all their filmi glory.

This is a first-of-its-kind exhibition for the world-famous museum, allowing fans across the globe the chance to see their favorite Bollywood stars immortalized in wax. A special Bollywood room is being created within Madame Tussauds Blackpool for the event, where a week-long series of activities will take place alongside the exhibit.

The exhibition will kick-off in Blackpool on October 8 and will run until December 28. After Blackpool, the exhibition will move to Bangkok and other cities, including London, Hong Kong, and other places across Europe and USA. The latest addition to the Bollywood figures of Madame Tussauds - the wax statue of Kareena Kapoor - will be unveiled in the midst of the exhibition, on October 18, as will a new figurine of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan!

The buzz is that Miss Kapoor will launch the exhibition, and might be joined by some of the other stars. A source at the museum states that the Bollywood room attracts a large number of Indian tourists; the touring exhibition will give more filmi fans around the world a chance to see their reel-life stars in wax. Kareena will be the sixth B-Town star to be part of Madame Tussauds Bollywood wax figures, after Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan.

SRK too busy for Paris Hilton

Heiress and international celebrity Paris Hilton arrives in India Saturday morning and while she is expected to meet Indian celebrities during her visit, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan has denied the rumours that he is hosting a party for her.

Some days back, some news reports had surfaced that suggested that SRK is set to host a party for Paris Hilton during her visit, but the actor said he is too busy at the moment.

"Some friends were planning to host a party for Paris Hilton. But I'm very busy with RA. One. So it's a little difficult. So my friends decided that if I can't come, then let it be. So we aren't having it now," Shah Rukh told reporters here at the sidelines of an event organised to announce the collaboration of his film RA.One with Western Union Money Transfers.

Paris will unveil her fall-winter designs during her three-day trip here.

Shahrukh Khan remembers Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi as friend's friend

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan says he had “huge attachment” to Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi who died Thursday, and remembers the Indian cricket legend as a “friend’s friend”. “The news of Pataudi sir is very saddening. He was an iconic figure. I have met him and known him very closely.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the Global Indian Music Awards (GIMA).

Pataudi died after battling a lung infection for about a month. The former Indian captain, 70, is survived by his wife, actress Sharmila Tagore, and three children, daughters Soha and Saba and son Saif.

“I will definitely go and meet the family," the 45-year-old star said. "I am close to Saif and Soha.”

Farhan Akhtar stunned with 3D trailer of RA.One

Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar was bowled over when superstar Shah Rukh Khan gave him a sneak peek into the 3D trailer of his mega-budget project RA.One. "@iamsrk showed us two songs and the trailer of RA.One in 3D last night... to put it simply... Outstanding!!!!" Farhan posted in his Twitter page Tuesday.

RA.One, a superhero film, is releasing this Diwali. Meanwhile, Farhan is busy wrapping up Don 2: The Chase Continues, a sequel to the 2006 film, Don: The Chase Begins Again, which itself is a remake of the 1978 film Don.

"Last song of Don in the cans... now the film is officially complete," he added.

The film, starring Shah Rukh in the lead, is set for release in December 2011.

Bollywood actors paying heavy price for on-screen machoism?

It may be all smiles for Bollywood at the BO, but personally, the stars have been fraught with health-issues one after the other. Whether it’s long-standing health problems like bad-backs or knees surfacing again or dealing with injuries on sets, it seems that these heroes are paying a heavy price for their herogiri.

First it was actor Shah Rukh Khan’s knee trouble during an awards function held abroad that made the star consider surgery. According to reports so bad was the pain that the star’s dance steps for his stage performance had to be altered to make it less painful for him.

Soon after, it was revealed that actor Hrithik Roshan’s knees too needed attention after it came to light that doing the heavy-duty action scenes had taken a toll on him physically. Then there’s superstar Rajinikanth who had to be hospitalised due to exhaustion and the shoot of his Rana with Deepika Padukone stands postponed. Actor John Abraham suffered severe injuries during the shooting of his upcomingForce and continues to work despite a fractured finger.

B-Town hunk Salman Khan too finally had surgery in the US to treat his Trigeminal Neuraglia after bearing the pain for seven years.

More recently, actors Abhishek Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi and Rana Daggubati sustained serious injuries while performing for stunts in their respective films. The otherwise superfit star Akshay Kumar too had a medical emergency recently after complaining of breathlessness after performing a rather dangerous fire stunt.

Fitness trainers and action choreographers in the industry blame it on the strenuous physical activity that these stars put their bodies too.

“Their bodies are constantly under a lot of pressure, and there’s only a certain limit that the body can take it. They work out and push their bodies to the limit, but beyond a certain point, the body will fight back. Hence the problem of bad backs and knees. This is more with action stars and applies to the fittest of the lot. Their lifestyle too doesn’t allow them the luxury of regular food and sleeping habits, so all that only adds to the stress physically,” explain fitness experts.

Action directors agree and reveal that despite the technical advancement that makes doing stunts safer, there’s always a risk involved. “Today most actors prefer doing their own stunts and things like being suspended from harness for hours can put a great strain on a body,” they add. “It’s not as easy as it looks for the stars, but with the competition, no one’s ready to go down on the knees here,” says trade analyst Komal Nahta.

Shahrukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor on Hrithik’s show

As part of the promotions for their upcoming movies, actors Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor have agreed to be part of the finale of Hrithik Roshan’s dance and reality show, Just Dance. The show that opened to a cumulative rating of 4.7 this June and got Hrithik voted as the best debutant judge-anchor imported from Bollywood on to the tube, will wrap up on October 1. The finale episode, however, will be shot in bits and pieces across two or three days in the last week of this month.

Shah Rukh, who will be on the show to promote RA.One, has already shot a promo on the day he launched the music of his fantasy, adventure at Film City, Goregaon. He will shoot his portions of the show two days in advance since he has committed to appear on another reality show on the same day as Hrithik’s finale shoot.
Ranbir, however, will be with Hrithik on the day the latter shoots the finale that has found its finalists in Ankan Sen, Surjeet Bansal and Karan Pangali. Rockstar’s lead actor will crown the winner, who will also shoot a music video with the show’s star-judge at some point in future as a promised prize alongside cash. It’s the first time that three male actors will appear together on a reality show that’s judged by one of them.

It’s rumoured that Hrithik’s debut show is wrapping up before time since it couldn’t manage to get the right numbers. It’s also said that the channel may not consider bringing the dance show back, and if they do so, it may not feature Hrithik. However, our well-placed source from the channel insists that the show is wrapping up a week after its actual deadline but refused to comment on Hrithik’s return. We sent several messages to Monica Shergill, senior creative director, Star Plus. But at the time of going to press, she hadn’t responded.
